Diabetes Treatment Home Remedy
Diabetes, also called diabetes mellitus, has become a very common heath problem. There are two main types of diabetes- type 1 diabetes in which the body does not produce insulin and type 2 diabetes in which the body does not produce enough insulin or the insulin that is produced does not work properly.Diabetes mellitus is a nutritional disorders, characterized by an abnormally elevated level of blood glucose and by the excretion of the excess glucose in the urine. It results from an absolute or relative lack of insulin which leads to abnormalities in carbohydrate metabolism as well as in the metabolism of protein and fat. Diabetes is a disease known to the medical world since time immemorial. Its incidence is , however, much higher at present than ever in the past. This is especially true in case of more advanced countries of the world due to widespread affluence and more generous food supply.
The most commonly-used screening tests are the determination of the fasting blood glucose level and the two-hour postprandial, that is after a meal. The normal fasting blood sugar content is 80 to 120 mg. per 100 ml. of blood and this can go up to a level of 180 mg. per 100 ml. of blood two hours after meals. Anything above these norms can be termed diabetic levels. Diabetes occurs in all age groups, from young infants to the elderly. The greatest incidence
occurs in middle or older aged persons. It is estimated that 80 to 85 per cent of all individuals with diabetes mellitus are 45 years of age or older.
Types Of Diabtes
Diabetes are two types – type 1 diabetes and 1- type 2 diabetes
1- Type 1 diabetes – The body does not produce insulin. Some people may refer to this type as insulin-dependent diabetes, juvenile diabetes, or early-onset diabetes. People usually develop type 1 diabetes before their 40th year, often in early adulthood or teenage years.Type 1 diabetes is nowhere near as common as type 2 diabetes. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1.
Patients with type 1 diabetes will need to take insulin injections for the rest of their life. They must also ensure proper blood-glucose levels by carrying out regular blood tests and following a special diet.
2- Type-2 diabetes – Type-2 Diabetes mellitus most commonly develops in adulthood and is more likely to occur in people who are overweight and physically inactive.Unlike type 1 diabetes which currently cannot be prevented, many of the risk factors for type 2 diabetes can be modified. For many people, therefore, it is possible to prevent the condition.
The International Diabetes Foundation highlight four symptoms that signal the need for diabetes testing:
1- Frequent urination
2- Weight loss
3- Lack of energy
4- Excessive thirst.
The word diabetes is derived from the Greek word meaning “to siphon to pass through”, and mellitus comes from the Latin word “honey”. Thus two characteristic symptoms, namely, copious urination and glucose in the urine give the name to the disease. The normal volume of urine passed daily is about one and a half litres. The urine is of a pale colour, has an acidic reaction and sweetish odour. The quantity of sugar present in it varies from one-and-quarter decigram to two and-a-half grams the total per day in many cases reaching as much as one kg in 15 litres of
urine. A diabetic feels hungry and thirsty most of the time, does not put on weight, though he eats every now and then, and gets tired easily, both physically and mentally. He looks pale, may suffer from anaemia, constipation, intense itching around the genital organs, palpitations and general weakness. He feels drowsy and has a lower sex urge than a normal person. Main following symptoms of diabetes are –
- Repeated urination.
- Too much thirsty.
- Drying throat after drinking too much water.
- Very hungry after eating food too.
- Being niggling and sometimes vomiting
- Stiffness in the hands and feet and raging in the body.
- Complain of weakness and fatigue all the time.
- Blurring with eyes.
- Infections in skin or urethra
- Stupidity in the skin.
- Lowering body temperature
- Pain in Muscles
- Weight Loss
Diabetes has been described by most biological doctors as a “prosperity” disease, primarily caused by systematic overeating and consequent obesity. Not only the overeating of sugar and refined carbohydrate but also of proteins and fats, which are transformed into sugar if taken in excess, is harmful and may result in diabetes. Too much food taxes the pancreas and eventually paralyses its normal activity. It has been estimated that the incidence of diabetes is four times higher in persons of moderate obesity and 30 times higher in persons of severe obesity. Grief, worry and anxiety also have a deep influence on the metabolism and may cause sugar to appear in the urine. The disease may be associated with some other grave organic disorders like cancer, tuberculosis and cerebral disease. Heredity is also a major factor in the development of the disease. It has been rightly said, ” Heredity is like a cannon and obesity pulls the trigger.”
Any successful method of diabetes treatment should aim at removal of the actual cause of the disease and building up of the whole health-level of the patient. Diet plays a vital role in such a treatment. The primary dietary onsideration for a diabetic patient is that he should be a strict lacto-vegetarian and take a low-calorie, low-fat, alkaline diet of high quality natural foods. Fruits, nuts and vegetables, whole meal bread and dairy products form a good diet for the diabetic. These foods are best eaten in as dry a condition as possible to ensure thorough salivation
during the first part of the process of digestion. Cooked starchy foods should be avoided as in the process of cooking the cellulose envelops of Diabetes the starch granules burst and consequently, the starch is far too easily absorbed in the system. The excess absorbed has to be got rid of by the kidneys and appears as sugar in the urine. With raw starchy foods, however, the saliva and digestive juices in the small intestine regulate the quantities required to be changed into sugar for the body’s needs. The unused and undigested portion of raw starchy foods does not become injurious to the system, as it does not readily ferment. The diabetic should not be afraid to eat fresh fruits and vegetables which contain sugar and starch. Fresh fruits contain sugar fructose, which does not need insulin for its metabolism and is well tolerated by diabetics. Fats and oils should be taken sparingly, for they are apt to lower the
tolerance for proteins and starches. Emphasis should be on raw foods as they stimulate and increase insulin production. For protein, home- made cottage cheese, various forms of soured milks and nuts are best. The patient should avoid overeating and take four or five small meals a day rather than three large ones.
Diabetes Diet Chart –
The following diet should serve as a guideline.
1- Exercise for half an hour daily.
2- Upon arising : A glass of lukewarm water with freshly squeezed lemon juice.
3- Breakfast : Any fresh fruit with the exception of bananas, soaked prunes, a small quantity of
whole meal bread with butter and fresh milk.
4- Make a flour mixture of 1 part barley, 1 part black chickpeas, and 4 parts whole-wheat flour and use this to form pancakes and bread.
5- Include whole grains in the diet, such as wheat bread/pasta and brown rice.
6- A quick check list to manage blood sugar levels.
7- Use garlic, onion, bitter gourd, spinach, raw banana, and black plum.
8- Avoid sweet, sour, and salty foods, potatoes, sweet potatoes, colocasia (taro), yams, fresh grains and pulses (legumes), whole yogurt (high in fat), and heavy, oily and spicy foods.
9- Lunch : Steamed or lightly cooked green vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, tomatoes,
spinach, turnip, asparagus and mushrooms, two or three whole wheat chapatis according to
appetite and a glass of butter-milk or curd.
10 -Cheese and yogurt prepared with skimmed (nonfat) milk may be taken.
11- Mid-afternoon : A glass of fresh fruit or vegetable juice.
12 -Avoid sweet fruits like pineapple, grapes, mangoes, etc.
13- Eat food at regular intervals and do not over eat.
14- Dinner : A large bowl of salad made up of all the raw vegetables in season. The salad may be
followed by a hot course, if desired, and fresh home-made cottage cheese.
15- Start doing some light exercise, such as brisk walking. Build up to a brisk walk of 30-40 minutes in the morning and again in the evening.
16- Ideally your food proportion should be 60% vegetables, 30% protein, 10% Carbohydrates with half an hour of mild exercise such as walking.
17- Bed-time Snack : A glass of fresh milk, Diabetic Diet
18- Avoid sleeping in the daytime as it increases Kledaka Kapha.
19- Consult physician if symptoms of dryness of mouth, thirst, numbness, fatigue, pain in muscles, frequent urination are noticed
Home Remedies For Diabetes
1- Mix half table-spoon Turmeric Powder + 1 table spoon amla Powder + half table spoon Methi Seeds Powder in half glass of water and take daily in the morning on empty stomach.
2- Banyan tree bark: The decoction of the bark of ficus bengalensis is consumed (50 ml) twice a day. Preparation method: 20 gm of ficus bark is heated in 4 glass of water. When the mixture remained approx. of 1 glass, it may be taken after make it cold.
3- Green tea is also very beneficial in diabetes. Green tea contains polyfinol, which is a strong anti-oxidant and hypo-glycemic element, the body is able to properly use insulin.
4- Cinnamon powder: This is one of the important natural home remedies. How to prepare: First take one litre of drinkable water. Add 3-4 tbsp of cinnamon powder and heat it for 20 minutes. Strain the mixture and made it cool. Drink it every day.
5- Boil 15 fresh Mango Leaves in 1 glass of water. Leave overnight. Filter this water and drink first thing in the morning. Tender mango leaves are very effective to treat diabetes by regulating insulin level in the blood.
6- Cut 5-6 lady finger in the glass or ceramic vessel and rub it in the night, filter this water in the morning and drink it.
7- Holly basil leaves are packed with antioxidants that relieve oxidative stress and have essential oils that help in lowering blood sugar levels in the body. Take 2 tablespoons of juice extracted from basil leaves and drink on an empty stomach in the morning.
8- Diabetic patients should regularly drink two teaspoons neem and four teaspoon banana leaves juice mixed together.
9- Basil leaves contain antioxidants and essential oils which are helpful for insulin. Therefore, to reduce the level of sugar, take two to three basil leaves on an empty stomach everyday, or juice of a basil leaf.
10- Vijaysar Churna: Pterocarpus marsupium is helpful in curing of diabetes mellitus:
- How to use: Pterocarpus marsupium bark may be taken in the form of powder twice a day.
- The cube of vijaysar may be kept in water overnight. Drink it in the morning empty stomach.
- Patients also like to take cubes of vijaysar.
11- Blackberry is considered to be the perfect medicine for diabetes patients. Diabetic patients should eat blackberry with black salt. It controls the amount of sugar in the blood.
12- Indian blackberry (Jambul) is considered to be an effective medicine for treating diabetes. The leaves, berries and seeds of the Indian Blackberry plant help in balancing the glucose level in the blood and prevent insulin spikes. Powder the dried seeds or leaves of the plant and drink it with twice a day.
14- Triphala: Triphala along with other ingredients are useful in lowering the sugar levels in blood. How to use: The decoction of equal parts of Triphala, root of barberry, colocynth and moth (20ml) may be taken along with turmeric powder (4gm) twice a day.
15- Mix 10 grams of gooseberry juice in 2 grams turmeric powder. Take this solution twice a day. This controls the amount of sugar in the blood.
16- Drink a cup of green tea on an empty stomach daily in the morning before your breakfast, is good for overall health. Green tea has polyphenol content, a strong antioxidant compound that is helpful in reducing the blood sugar insulin level in the body.
17- Use one gram cinnamon in your daily diet for approximately one month, reducing blood sugar levels will also help control weight.
18- The vitamin C present in Indian gooseberry promotes proper functioning of the pancreas. Extraact the juice from the fruit and take 2 teaspoons of the juice mixed with a glass of water. Consume this drink daily in the morning on an empty stomach to keep your blood sugar level in control.
19- Eating a healthy diet that contains vitamins and minerals like fruits such as – apples, apricots and berries. And vegetables like carrots, beet and bitter gourd is essential for keeping your body healthy and balancing blood sugar levels.
20- Bitter gourd is used as a medicine for diabetes. Its bitter juice reduces the amount of sugar. Therefore, its juice should be consumed daily. With boiled bitter water, diabetes can be permanently terminated.
21- Snake gourd: Decoction of equal part of Patola (a variety of small cucumber-snake gourd), Neem, fruit of embolic myrobalan and stem of Guduct (14 to 28 ml.) be taken thrice a day.
22- Drumstick leaves are high in fiber content best known for their ability to boost’s energy. The leaf increases satiety and helps in slowing the breakdown of food and also in lowering blood pressure.
23- Fenugreek seeds are a rick source of fiber useful for controlling diabetes. The fenugreek seeds can be soaked in water overnight and should be taken early in the morning before breakfast. The seeds can also be powdered and mixed with milk. This can enhance the secretion of glucose- dependent insullin. Repeat the remedy daily for few months to control blood sugar levels.
24- Fenugreek is very important for the treatment of diabetes, it also cures older diabetes. The powder of fenugreek powder should be taken with two tspoon water in the morning, empty stomach.
25- Take a tomato, a cucumber and a bitter gourd and take out the juice. Take this juice empty in the morning every morning. It has a lot of benefits in diabetes.
26- Wheat plants contain diseased properties. Acidity is also controlled by consuming juice from small plants of wheat and consuming it daily.
27- Diabetic patients are advised to take a little less on appetite and take light meal. In this, hunger should be eaten by eating cucumber lemon after eating cucumber lemon.
28- Turnip is also of great importance in diabetes treatment. The use of turnip also reduces the amount of sugar in the blood. In addition, the diabetic patient should also use the troi, gourd, spinach, papaya etc.
Fruit Remedy For Diabetes –
29- Flesh foods find no place in this regimen, for they increase the toxaemic condition underlying the diabetic state and reduce the sugar tolerance. On the other hand, a non-stimulating vegetarian diet, especially one made up of raw foods, promotes and increases sugar tolerance.
30 – Celery, cucumbers, string beans, onion and garlic are especiallybeneficial. String bean pod tea is an excellent natural substitute for insulin and highly beneficial in diabetes. The skin of the pods of green beans are extremely rich in silica and certain hormone substances which are closely related to insulin. One cup of string bean tea is equal to one unit of insulin. Cucumbers contain a hormone needed by the cells of the pancreas for producing insulin. Onion and garlic have proved beneficial in reducing blood sugar in diabetes.
31- Recent scientific investigations have established that bitter gourd (karela) is highly beneficial in the treatment of diabetes. It contains an insulin-like principle, known as plant-insulin which has been found effective in lowering the blood and urine sugar levels. It should, therefore, be included liberally in the diet of the diabetic. For better results, the diabetic should take the juice of about 4 or 5 fruits every morning on an empty stomach. The seeds of bitter gourd can be added to food in a powdered form. Diabetics can also use bitter gourd in the form of decoction by boiling the pieces in water or in the form of dry powder.
32- Another effective home remedy is jambul fruit known as jamun in the vernacular. It is regarded in traditional medicine as a specific against diabetes because of its effect on the pancreas. The fruits as such, the seeds and fruit juice are all useful in the treatment of this disease. The seeds contain a glucoside ‘jamboline’ which is believed to have power to check the pathological conversion of starch into sugar in cases of increased production of glucose. They should be dried and powdered. This powder should be taken mixed in milk , curd or water.
33- The patient should avoid tea, coffee and cocoa because of their adverse influence on the digestive tract. Other foods which should be avoided are white bread, white flour products, sugar tinned fruits, sweets, chocolates, pastries, pies, puddings, refined cereals and alcoholic drinks. The most important nutrient in the treatment of diabetes is manganese which is vital in the production of natural insulin. It is found in citrus fruits, in the outer covering of nuts, grains and in Diabetes the green leaves of edible plants. Other nutrients of special value are zinc, B complex vitamins and poly-unsaturated fatty acids.
Exercise (Yoga) for Diabetes
1- Exercise is also an important factor in the treatment of diabetes. Light games, jogging and swimming are recommended. Yogic asanas such as bhujangasana, shalabhasana, dhanurasana, paschimottanasana, sarvangasna, halasana, ardha-matsyendrasana and shavasana, yogic krisyas like jalneti and kunajl and pranayamas such as kapalbhati, anuloma-viloma and ujjai are highly beneficial.
2- Hydrotherapy and colonic irrigations form a very important part of treatment. The colon should be thoroughly cleansed every second day or so, until the bowel discharge assumes normal characteristics. Bathing in cold water greatly increases the circulation and enhances the capacity of the muscles to utilise sugar.
The diabetic patient should eliminate minor worries from his daily life. He must endeavor to be
more easy-going and should not get unduly worked up by the stress and strain of life.
Ayurvedic food for diabetes
As per ayurvedic lifestyle, following types of food may be taken and permitted by diabetes patient. These wholesome foods are bitter gourd, amla, snake gourd, turmeric, drum stick, barley, wheat, green gram, horse gram, pepper, garlic, blue berry, soyabean, cucumber, spinach, fenugreek seeds, jamun, bel, tulsi.
What Food should Diabetic Avoid?
A diabetic should avoid eating Rice, Potato, Sweet fruits, Maida, Wheat, Deep fried foods, Red meat and Sabudana and should have more intake of protein rich foods like Chickpea, Moong, lentils, Masoor, Moong Daal, Soya bean products and Chana Daal. Vegetables like Palak (spinach), leafy greens, Dudhi (bottle gourd), Turai, Bhopla (white pumpkin), Padwal (snake gourd), Karela (bitter gourd), cereals like Green millet, Ragi, corn, Kulit (horsegram) and Barley (Jav).
