Headache  afflict almost everyone of some time or the other most headaches are functional, being caused by temporary upsets and are not related to any organic changes in the brain. They are often nature’s warning that something is wrong somewhere in the body. The actual pain, however, arises from irritation to nerve ending in the shoulder, neck and scalp muscles and also in the smooth muscles encircling the blood vessels encircling the blood vessels which serve these areas.

There are several types of headaches, the most cause being tension  headaches, cluster headaches and migraines.

Tension headache-


it beings with a sensation of pain and tension, generally towards the back of head. The pain lasts for more than an hour but the feeling of tension may persist. It is caused by persistent contraction of the scalp muscles, which may be a result of prolonged concentration on a particular activity like reading and sewing. Also emotional stress and anxiety can bring of a tension headaches.


Cluster headaches-


This type of headaches causes several pains and tends to occur nightly for several week or month and they may disappear for years. Unlike tension headaches, cluster headaches interfere with sleep. It starts late at night with intense pain behind on eyes, the eyes fills with tears and the nose get blocked on the affected side. There is rarely any nausea or vomiting. Cluster headaches are usually brought on by stress or alcohol.




This is type of recurrent headaches confined to one side of head only. The symptoms include nausea and vomiting, accompanied by visual distortions such as seeing ‘stars’ or an ‘aura of spots’ before the eyes, and a feeling of numbness or tingling in the face, head or a leg. A migraine occurs due to the sudden and inexplicable expansion and contraction of the arteries leading to one side of the head. Some food may set off an attack of migraine. These include aged and strong cheese, pods of broad beans, canned figs and alcohol. Large amounts of monosodium glutamate employed as a flavouring agent in foods may also precipitate an attack of migraine.



Causes of headache


The common cause of headache is allergy, emotional reasons, eyestrain, high blood pressure, hangover, infection, low blood sugar, nutritional deficiency, tension, the presence of poisons and toxins in the body and migraine. Allergies, an often unsuspected cause of headache, vary in different individuals. The foods to which some people are allergic and which can trigger headaches are milk and milk products, chocolates, chicken liver, alcohol and strong cheese. Sneezing and diarrhea are further indications of an allergy.

1.Eye strain is a common cause of headache. In such case an eye specialist should be consulted and proper treatment taken. “Simple eye exercises such as moving the eye up and down and from side to side, palming, rotating the head, with neck outstretched, forward and backward three times, then thrice clockwise and thrice anti-clockwise can relieve eye strain.”

2.High blood pressure can cause pounding headaches. The headache usually starts at the back of head on getting up at the morning. “A safe method of treatment for this is to immerse your legs to calf-leave in a tub of hot water for 15-20 minutes. This draws the blood away from the head and down to the feet, giving relief from the headache.”


3.Many people get a server headache after consuming alcohol in excess. Alcohol causes the blood vessels to swell, resuming in a painful headache. The best treatment for this is to avoid excessive consumption of alcohol. “A hangover headache can be avoided taking a vitamin B-1(thiamine) tablet with the drink.”


4.Headache may occur if there is an infection, such as a cold, virus and fever. Here, it is the infection that should be tackled vitamin C therapy is the best all around the method.” For a cold high doses of vitamin c should be taken at hourly intervals with the appearance of the first symptoms like a sore throat, runny nose etc. vitamin c has worked miracles and is considered a natural antibiotic.”

5.Low blood sugar is one of the causes of irritability and headache. Sugar is not a cure for low blood sugar, thought it may raise blood sugar temporarily and make one feel better for a while. Low blood sugar is the result of an abused pancreas which over stimulates the production of insulin in the body. “It can be controlled by eating smaller meals at short intervals rather than the standard three large meals daily. The intake of carbohydrates should be cut down to the minimum and coffee should be eliminated as it over stimulates the pancreas.”

6.A lake of iron, resulting in anemia is a common cause of headache. The headache sometimes appears before the onset of anemia, due to a chronic iron deficiency. Brewer’s yeast is an excellent source of iron and anemia can easily be preventing by taking a few teaspoons daily. Headache can also brought on due to the deficiency of B vitamins, namely pantothenic acid, B1 (thiamine) B12 ( pyridoxine) and can be cured by taking these vitamins.

7.Tension headache are probably the most common of all, and are caused by emotional conflicts which result in stress, stress causes the muscles of the shoulder, neck and scalp to tense unconsciously. It increases gradually and passes of with the release of tension. “One should try to relieve the stress which produces headache. ”

1.Mix 1 tsp finely ground cinnamon in 1 tsp water and apply on the affected parts.

2.Follow the simple Chinese acupressure technique and say goodbye to those nasty headaches. This can be done anywhere and at any time. place your thumb on the web of skin between the thumb and index finger of your other palm and apply pressure for about 2 minutes. Repeat on the other hand. However, this Chinese acupressure massage is not recommended for pregnant women.

3.Mix three drops of peppermint essential oil in one tablespoon of almond oil, olive oil or just water. Massage your forehead and temples with it. Or, you can put crushed fresh peppermint leaves on your forehead. can prepare a steam treatment by adding a few drops of peppermint essential oil to a small pot of boiling water. Inhale the steam for a few minutes.

5.Put three or four fresh basil leaves in a cup of boiling water and let it simmer for a few minutes. Optionally, add a little honey and then sip the tea slowly.

6.chew some fresh basil leaves or massage your forehead with basil oil mixed with a base oil.

7.Washcloth dipped in ice-cold water over your head for five minutes. Repeat the process several times.

8.Crush a few cloves gently and put them in a sachet or a clean handkerchief. Inhale the smell of the crushed cloves whenever you have a headache until you get some relief from the pain.

9.You can also mix together two teaspoons of coconut oil, one teaspoon of sea salt and two drops of clove oil and rub this mixture gently on your forehead.

10.Add two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to a full glass of water and drink it.

1.Mix 1 tsp each of the following powders and store: camphor(kapoor), nutmeg(jaiphal), cardamom(choti ilaichi) and cloves(laung). Take 2  pinches with warm water.

2.Powder equal quantities of liquorice (mulathi) and cumin (jeera). Take ¼ tsp everyday along with 1 tsp honey for a month.

3.For half headache, grind together 1 onion and 3-4 peppercorns(kalimirch) in a little water, strain to get juice. Put a few drops juice in the nostril opposite to the side of headache.

4.Any kind of headache or even migraine can be relieved by ice packs. Place a few ice cubes in a polythene bag and apply this on the forehead and temples to ease the pain(avoid in winter).

5.In case of headache mix 1 tsp dry ginger(saunth) with 2 tbsp water to a paste. Apply on the forehead to provide quick relief.

6.Make a paste of 1” stick cinnamon(dalchini), 4-5 peppercorn( sabut kalimirch), 1/2 “ piece of ginger(adark) and 4 tsp of powdered dried ginger. Apply this thinly on the forehead. Rest and relax allowing it to dry. Then remove by washing it off.




1.Grind the fresh amla fruit into a fine paste and apply on affected parts.

2.Grind 2 to 3 cloves into a fine paste along with ½ tsp dried ginger and apply on nose and forehead.

1.BALM|Melissa officinalis |Rogani Balsan -Pour the 1 cup boiling water over the 2 tsp leaves, cover the container and let the mixture stand for 10 minutes. Strain and sweeten with sugar or honey and drink hot . 1 cup twice a day.

2. GINGER| Zingiber officinale| Adrak-Combine the crushed ginger  30 g and  2 cups water in a covered pan and let it stand for 25 minutes. Then strain the infusion and drink hot or warm.Consume 1-2 cups a day.

3.LAVENDER|Lavandula angustifolia|Dharu-Drop the 1 tsp crushed blossoms into the  1 cup boiling water, cover the vessel and allow the flowers to steep for 10-15 minutes then strain. The tea is ready to drink.Consume 1 cup, twice a day, morning and evening for 2-3 weeks

4.ROSEMARY|Rosmarinus officinalis linn|  Rusmary-In a covered container, boil the 1 handful crushed rosemary leaves in 2 cups water for 15 minutes, remove from the fire, cool and strain.Consume 1 cup, twice a day.

5.THYME-LEAVED GRATIOLA|Herpestis moniera|Brhambhi
-Boil the ½ tsp crushed leaves in 2 cups water for 15 minutes in a covered container. Remove from the heat and allow the decoction to cool before straining it. Consume 1-2 tbsp, twice a day.

6.VIOLET|Viola odorata| Bunafshah-To 1 cup boiling water, add the crushed  2 tsp violet leaves and let the mixture stand, covered for 15 minutes. Then strain and drink as recommended.Consume1 cup a day.

7.CHAMOMILE+LAVENDER+VALERIAN|Anthemis nablis + lavandula angustifolia + vatenana Officinalis linn|
Babunah + dharu + jalakan-Take Crushed Chamomile flowers 1 tsp,crushed Lavender flowers ½ tsp, crushed valerian root ½ tsp,Boiling water 1 cup .Place the herb mixture in cup of boiling water, cover and steep for 8 .Consume1 cup, twice a day .

Caution- pregnant and nursing women and children below two years of age should not drink this tea.

8.LEMON BALM + LIME + ROSEMARY| Melissa officinalis+ citrus bergamia rise r poi+ Rosmarinus officinalis L.|
Aspurak + neembu + rusmary-Take crushed Lemon balm herb 1/3 tsp,crushed Lime flowers 1/3 tsp,crushed Rosemary herb 1/3 tsp,Boiling water 1 cup.Combine the three herbs and pour the boiling water over this mixture, cover and let the tea stand for 15 minutes, then strain.Consume 1-4 cups a day.
